Nigella Lawson's daring dresses send designer's website into 'meltdown'

         

SHE was left 'mortified' when she realised she'd been showing off too much décolletage on US television, but Nigella Lawson's latest looks have done one designer a huge favour.

London-based brand, Diva Catwalk, suffered a 'meltdown' on their website this week after the pretty brunette wore two of their frocks in the States.

First of all, Nigella stepped out wearing the figure-hugging £135 red ‘Catherine’ dress as she promoted US cookery show The Taste, and then she wore another one of their garments on an episode of the programme.

A spokeswoman Diva Catwalk told The Mail on Sunday: "We are only a small firm but Nigella has been a fan for years. We don’t know how she first heard of us but she’s been wearing our designs for a couple of years now.

"Last year she wore our Midhurst dress on The Taste and the response was so overwhelming that our website crashed. She only has to wear a dress once for there to be a deluge in orders. We call it the Nigella factor."

They continued: "This week we were inundated with calls and internet orders when she wore the Catherine dress, which sold out immediately. Our phone lines and internet have gone into meltdown.

"It’s amazing how Nigella promotes British design. We could not be more thrilled. We are only a small company but when Nigella wears our dresses the world notices and we sell out. We are incredibly grateful to her for her support."

However, Nigella may have looked stunning in the garments but she admitted she was left red-faced when she watched the first episode of the ABC show back.

Sitting at the panel wearing the low-cut pale blue £115 ‘Opal’ dress, the mother-of-two certainly showed off plenty of cleavage.

Taking to Twitter after the show, the Domestic Goddess wrote: "I had no idea quite so much décolletage was on display; mortified. On top of everything else."

But Nigella should feel chuffed, because although other celebrities such as Carol Vorderman and Olympian Denise Lewis are fans of the brand, the firm’s spokeswoman admitted: "Only Nigella gets the phone ringing off the hook.

"It’s because she always looks so amazing and our dresses flatter her in all the right places."

Speaking about her beau - who she went public with in May - during an interview on Capital FM recently, Ellie revealed they have a love of singing together in private.

'We sing together right, not in a really cheesy way, but we sing in a jokey way, because we used to like the same bands, that's one of the things we've bonded over,' she said.

And it seems the appetite for Princess Diana's glamorous dresses has not subsided.

Five dresses designed for and worn by the late British royal have gone under the hammer in Los Angeles for a total of nearly half a million dollars.


For bidders on a lower budget, letters, crockery and a pair of cuff-links commemorating Diana and Prince Charles's wedding were also up for auction.

Three of the gowns were made by British dressmaker Catherine Walker, Diana's personal couturier and close friend for 16 years.

A cream lace dress designed by Zandra Rhodes and worn by Diana in 1987 to the Birthright Benefit at the London Palladium was also up for grabs.

And the surprise of the night came from a Caroline Charles burgundy wool coat dress, which was expected to go for $20-40,000 but scored a total of $125,000.

The collection was originally sold in Paris in 1997 - a month before Diana's death in the French capital at the age of 36.



Now, 20 years later, the anonymous winners decided to hand the lucrative gowns to Julien's Auctions.

The Zandra Rhodes evening gown created for Diana, which was estimated to sell for $80-100,000, went for $100,000.

The Catherine Walker dresses all fetched within or just above their estimated price of between $60,000 and $80,000.

An off-the-shoulder petal pink gown embellished with bands of simulated pearls, faceted glass and beadwork, worn by Diana in 1993 to the Savoy Theatre in London, went for $75,000.

Also on offer was a strapless ivory silk crepe dress which went for $76,800, while a chartreuse silk georgette gown worn by Diana in 1993 fetched $81,250.


Ms Walker, who died in 2012 after a long battle with cancer, worked tirelessly to create over 1,000 outfits for Diana; from right after her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles, to until her death in 1997.

According to a friend of Miss Walker, journalist Alison Jane Reid - who wrote an in-depth story about her for MailOnline in 2010 - the Princess and the designer were close, and their relationship founded on 'loyalty and total discretion.'

Reid wrote: 'After Diana’s separation from Prince Charles in 1992, clothes became even more important to her.

'Together, the two women devised a joint strategy of ‘defiant’ frocks - body-conscious but without vulgarity - that Diana wore in separation and divorce.'

Four other items which belonged to the late princess also went under the hammer in Beverly Hills.


A handwritten letter from Diana, using her Kensington Palace stationary and dated June 1997, reads: 'The inspiration for this wonderful sale comes from just one person... our son William'.

In keeping with the royal theme at the Julien's auction, a slice of cake from the 2011 royal wedding of Diana's son Prince William, and the daughter-in-law she never met, Kate Middleton, was estimated to fetch between $1,000 and $2,000.

And also under the hammer was a blank invitation to the same wedding, printed on Queen Elizabeth II's Buckingham Palace stationary.

'The Lord Chamberlain is commanded by The Queen to invite __ to the Marriage of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales, K.G. with Miss Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey on Friday 29th April at 11.00 a.m.,' it reads. 'Dress: Uniform, Morning Coat or Lounge Suit.'

There were also fun awards handed out including for the best dressed student and the pupils most likely to become teachers.

Mr Sallows added: "At the end of the night and the days following the prom it hits home to the student that it was the last occasion they will all be together as a group."

Philip Stack, the school's head teacher, said: "I have always been very proud of them and their achievements and never more so than at our prom."

Caffeine overdose ruled cause of prom king's death

A caffeine overdose has been ruled the cause of an Ohio prom king's sudden death before graduation in May.

The Lorain County Coroner reports Logan Stiner of LaGrange, Ohio, had toxic levels of caffeine in his body, and died from an irregular heartbeat and seizures after ingesting caffeine powder.

Stiner was found by his brother near the white powder on May 27, having taken enough to cause the overdose while at home from school for lunch.

"I never thought it would hurt an 18-year-old child," resident Lora Balka told WKYC. She says she hopes his death will encourage other youths to consume caffeine in a mindful manner.

While it's not sold in stores, caffeine powder is available on the Internet and is stronger than traditional forms of the supplement. One teaspoon of the powder contains up to 1,600 milligrams of caffeine — about 70 cans of Red Bull. Comparably, energy drinks contain about 280 milligrams, and a 12-ounce Starbucks coffee contains 260 milligrams.

A warning label on the caffeine powder suggests using a micro-scale to measure a safe amount, and companies claim that it improves focus, increases endurance and elevates mood.

The Band Perry, Wynonna Judd Lift Williams Syndrome Campers' Lives at Country Music Camp

Last week was a special one for 30 campers from across the country, who descended upon Nashville for the Academy of Country Music Lifting Lives Music Camp. Held June 23-27, the five-day event provided music enrichment through performance and education for campers who have been diagnosed with Williams Syndrome.

Many of the biggest stars in the format took time out of their schedules to share the gift of music with the campers. On Monday, Republic Nashville’s The Band Perry led a songwriting workshop, recording a song with the campers called "Bright Eyes" during a Wednesday recording session with producer Ross Copperman at Ocean Way Studio that also featured a visit from Curb’s Lee Brice. Throughout the week, campers got to visit with rising stars The Swon Brothers, J.T. Hodges, and Casey James, before winding up their week closing out the Friday night performance of the Grand Ole Opry with Chris Janson.

Sandwiched in the middle of the week’s events was a night of karaoke at Music City hotspot Winners Bar on Division. Participating in the Wednesday night event were Atlantic’s Brett Eldredge and the legendary Wynonna Judd.

Eldredge told Billboard that he was glad to be a part of the event for the second year. “I fell deeply in love with this event and ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp," he said, "I woke up and was waiting all day to get to this moment. I called my mom and dad last year after it was over, and told them I wish you could experience what I just did writing songs with the campers. I’ve never been that moved in all of my life. I wanted to be able to use my music ability to help out others and share with others. The campers here have so much energy and love for it, I’m just so inspired.”

An event like the karaoke night is proof of the power of music, and how it can unite, said Eldredge. "Someone is singing ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ right now, and they are getting into it on stage. They’re holding their hands up on stage and enjoying it. That’s what I want to see when I go to watch a show. I want to feel it, and they do that. I get to be here to lend my craft to it, and that’s a touching feeling. Music touches all, and it can take you so many places – it has nothing to do with your struggles you might be having. It can help you with them."

For Wynonna, what sets the night apart is the pure and unfiltered enthusiasm that the campers feel for the music – and the artists involved. "These kids here are so joyful. One of them said to one of the camp counselors, 'I get to see Wynonna. That’s going to make my whole week.' I love that kind of feeling. Country music fans are the most loyal in the universe. I get more out of it than they do. Somebody will walk up to me and say something so real and so tangible that isn’t about show business. It’s real people, and a real loving environment. They get out there and they own the stage. Last year, I had a guy say 'Sit down, I’m gonna sing to you.' He was telling me what to do."

Judd agreed with Eldredge’s assessment concerning the power of music, saying she still is amazed by its' healing power. "I think music saves everyone’s life. I’m on Twitter everyday, and people will talk about listening to my song while I’m going through chemotherapy or one of my songs helping them through a divorce or something like that. Music is a healer, and I don’t care what you’re going through. We all can remember a song from a period in our lives that got us through."

For camper Joshua Dean – who entertained the crowd with take on The Zac Brown Band’s "Colder Weather," it was a week that he will be eternally grateful to the ACM as well as the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities for organizing. "I think this is crazy. I’ve been to a lot of country music venues, but nothing like this. Lifting Lives has really blessed us all, and to be able to come here, and experience this for the first time. ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp gives young adults with Williams Syndrome a chance to experience Nashville and country music, but all kinds of music. To experience all of that in one week is an awesome feeling."

Jennifer Aniston Looks Radiant on First Red Carpet in Months, Supports Justin Theroux at Leftovers

Jennifer Aniston's first red carpet appearance in months was worth the wait. The Cake actress looked stunning and slim as she walked alongside fiance Justin Theroux at the New York City premiere of his new HBO series The Leftovers on Monday, June 23.

Asked how it felt to have Aniston there to support him, Theroux told Us Weekly, "It feels great!"

Clad in a black blouse left unbuttoned to expose her cleavage, and a black miniskirt that showed off her toned, tanned legs, the 45-year-old Friends alum happily posed for photographs with her husband-to-be, 42. She wore her hair in loose, tousled waves past her shoulders, and kept the accessories to a minimum—just earrings, a gold watch, and her huge diamond engagement ring.

Theroux, meanwhile, cut a dapper figure in a Dior Homme navy wool suit and crisp white shirt. He and his future wife—engaged since 2012—were all smiles on the red carpet, and even wrapped their arms around each other's waists as they stood side-by-side.

"Jen and Justin were really sweet together," an onlooker tells Us Weekly. "They were both absolutely beaming. Inside the event, Jen was being really sociable and looked extremely happy. They looked totally in love and seemed very relaxed."

Aniston has not made an official red carpet appearance in several months. Her last major premiere was the Life of Crime debut at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival in September. Since then, she's been busy filming the movie Cake, for which she wears minimal makeup and sports a short brunette bob.

The Leftovers, premiering June 29 on HBO, stars the actress' fiance as the chief of police in a fictional New York suburb following a global "Rapture" of sorts. The show is based on Tom Perrotta's novel of the same name, and costars Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, and Chris Zylka.

The Daytime Emmys' red-carpet hosts stir up controversy with a rape joke

This year, some real-life drama surrounds the soap-focused Daytime Emmy Awards.

A few weeks before the ceremony, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences issued a casting call for social media mavens to host the event's live-streamed red carpet preshow. Specifically, as reported by Soap Opera Network, organizers wanted "millennials between the ages of 18-35, all ethnicities, who have a strong entertainment news background and/or very strong social media following (300,000 followers minimum)." Last Wednesday, the NATAS revealed that it had selected a foursome with a mighty social reach: Vine star Brittany Furlan, style vlogger Lauren Elizabeth, beauty vlogger Jessica Harlow, and Meghan Rosette, who vlogs about style and beauty.

The chosen four certainly have large followings on sites like YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Vine, and Facebook—but their collective entertainment-news backgrounds aren't quite as strong. After a red carpet show criticized as amateurish and occasionally downright offensive, some irate viewers are demanding that NATAS issue an apology for Furlan, Elizabeth, Harlow, and Rosette's antics.

Among the offenses the women committed, as outlined by TVLine's Matt Mitovich: Furlan "literally came onto, and hard, every male in attendance, to a degree that makes E!'s Giuliana Rancic look positively demure" (see, for example, this interaction with Mario Lopez); Harlow called The Bold and the Beautiful's Lawrence Saint-Victor "a beautiful chocolate man" before asking, apropos of nothing, "What's it like to be a black man on a soap opera these days?" Most egregiously, Furlan bid goodbye to General Hospital actor Ryan Paevey by saying, "We're going to get you away from us before we rape you."

Viewers were swift to criticize the hosts, especially for Furlan's casual evocation of rape.

The four hosts—and the NATAS—have yet to respond directly to the criticism. Furlan did, however, tweet this not-so-subtle message in the wee hours of Monday morning:

It takes a lot of effort to change outfits several times a day.

But Lady Gaga once again proved she's got energy in spades when she exited her New York apartment on Sunday dressed in a 1970s disco-style silver dress paired with diamanté-studded stockings and soft blush pumps.

Fans waiting outside went wild for the look - which included a funky curly brown wig and retro round sunglasses - and bestowed upon her a bouquet of flowers.



On her way to a recording session with crooner Tony Bennett, the songstress tweeted: 'I love singing with him.'

Gaga's look took a page from 1970s disco fashion, known for flashy silver and gold dresses - and very high hair.

And of course the pop star upped the fashion ante by highlighting her legs in a pair of sheer stockings which featured glitzy diamanté studs all over, worn with blush-coloured pointy pumps.

She completed the look with a pair of round silver-framed sunglasses featuring amber lenses.

Despite her fashion athletics, Gaga is looking healthy and rested.

A day earlier, the singer looked like a completely different person with her blackened hair piled on top of her head and wearing a cleavage-revealing blue jumpsuit that defied gravity, with a jacket over her shoulder as she met with fans.

With her hair up in a bun, the singer looked almost unrecognisable from her usual blonde self.

Without a meat suit in sight, she capped the look with a feminine pair of heels and some designer sunglasses. She also carried a black handbag.

Even more impressively, she kept it simple in terms of make-up and jewellery - actually looking tasteful.

It comes just one day after she was seen in a funky-patterned purple shirt. She rounded out the outfit with a pair of beige, classic stilettos.

But Lady Gaga still made sure to maintain her unique edgy style as she donned her striking black wig.

It was the same wig that she wore on Friday, when she stepped out in a white billowy gown, highly reminiscent of character Princess Leia from Star Wars.

The star was keeping up appearances even while debate raged over whether the 28-year-old had finally gone too far with the clip for Do What You Want.

On Thursday, the supposedly scrapped clip of the video, showing her duet partner R. Kelly pretending to fondle the Telephone singer while she was on the operating table, leaked on the internet and caused outrage.

Instead of addressing the raging controversy over the film - which had been branded akin to an 'ad for rape,' - the star made a flippant reference to it, posting a picture of her dogs on Instagram late Thursday claiming they were watching in it.

The Poker Face singer captioned the picture: 'Stella and Asia after watching DWUW [Do What You Want].'

She also decided to show that she had not lost any sleep over the criticism posting a makeup-free selfie while lying in bed.

Looking fresh faced and rested, Lady gaga wrote: 'Morning monster world.'

Lady Gaga will soon be returning on the road of her artRAVE tour at the end of June, and will commence the rest of her tour in Milwaukee.

The singer had earlier cancelled several performances in Seattle and Vancouver following a bout with bronchitis in late May, People reports.
